5.7 million Fairtrade Certified™ Cadbury Dairy Milk blocks expected to be sold in New Zealand this year
Cadbury® Dairy Milk® milk chocolate, New Zealand’s best-selling block chocolate, will now include Fairtrade Certified™ products in its range.

5.7 million Fairtrade Certified™ Cadbury Dairy Milk blocks expected to be sold in
New Zealand this year

Cadbury® Dairy Milk® milk chocolate, New Zealand’s best-selling block chocolate, will now include Fairtrade Certified™ products in its range. Fairtrade Certified™ Cadbury Dairy Milk milk chocolate will be starting to hit shelves in supermarkets and dairies throughout the country from today.

In a new-look pack and with the same great taste, Fairtrade Certified™ Cadbury Dairy Milk milk chocolate allows Kiwi chocolate lovers to help improve the lives of Fairtrade cocoa farmers and their families in developing countries.

Fairtrade Certification is about providing a better deal for producers in developing countries by setting a fair and stable price for their produce and providing an additional Fairtrade premium for investment in local community development. This results in improved working conditions and helps enable Fairtrade farmers to take control of their lives and create a better future.

Cadbury Dairy Milk milk chocolate products becoming Fairtrade Certified™ will increase Fairtrade chocolate sales 20 fold, and double last year’s total sales of Fairtrade Certified™ products in New Zealand and Australia. In Ghana, more than 45,000 Ghanaian farmers will immediately benefit from Cadbury’s global move to Fairtrade Certification for Cadbury Dairy Milk milk chocolate products.

Fairtrade Australia and New Zealand Executive Director Steve Knapp says, “From today, lovers of Cadbury Dairy Milk milk chocolate will be able to make their purchase in the knowledge that they are supporting a brighter future for very small scale cocoa farmers, their families and their villages.

“This is a real milestone for Fairtrade and for cocoa growers in Ghana. Cadbury Dairy Milk milk chocolate will create a step change in awareness of Fairtrade here in New Zealand, while in Ghana it could potentially transform the lives and opportunities for thousands of people in cocoa-growing communities.”

Cadbury New Zealand Managing Director Matthew Oldham says, “The scale of Cadbury Dairy Milk milk chocolate going Fairtrade is massive with more than 5.7 million Fairtrade Certified™ Cadbury Dairy Milk milk chocolate blocks in New Zealand and an estimated 350 million Fairtrade Certified™ Cadbury Dairy Milk milk chocolate blocks globally in 2010.

“Kiwis who choose Fairtrade Certified™ Cadbury Dairy Milk milk chocolate are not only treating themselves, but helping to do more good for producers in the developing world.”

The move is the result of nearly two years of work with Cadbury’s Fairtrade partners globally. It follows more than 100 years of pioneering ethical chocolate production, including the ground-breaking Cadbury Cocoa Partnership where Cadbury is providing NZ$120 million over 10 years to improve the lives of cocoa farmers.

Nine products in the Cadbury Dairy Milk range, including 50g bars, 100g, 200g, 350g blocks and sharepacks, are now Fairtrade Certified™. The new-look pack design also confirms the return to a cocoa butter-only chocolate recipe across the entire Cadbury Dairy Milk block chocolate range.

About Fairtrade

Fairtrade is a unique Certification and Labeling system which seeks to address the imbalance of power in some trading relationships, unstable markets and the injustices of some conventional trade. Fairtrade empowers producers, tackles poverty and promotes development. Globally through a groundswell of consumer support, Fairtrade has achieved significant market share across many products in 20 countries over the last 20 years. In 2009, Australian and New Zealand retail sales of Fairtrade Certified & Labelled products grew by over 50% to just over NZ$64 million and in the last six years since the first Fairtrade Certified & Labeled products went on sale in both countries, cumulative retail sales figures have surpassed NZ$155 million.

Currently more than five million people – farmers, producers, workers and their families – across 58 developing countries in Africa, Asia, Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean benefit from the Fairtrade system.

A product is Fairtrade Certified if it carries the Fairtrade Label – an easy way for consumers to recognise and choose products that have met internationally agreed Fairtrade Standards.

Fairtrade delivers a better deal for farmers and producers in the developing world through:

The Fairtrade Price – Fairtrade is a certification system which provides developing country farmers and producers with a designated fair price for their produce, helping protect them from damaging fluctuations in world market prices.

The Fairtrade Premium – Fairtrade also provides these farmers and producers with an additional sum of money for investment in social, economic and environmental development – helping them grow their businesses and invest in their communities by building roads, schools and hospitals.

Environmentally sustainable farming methods

Security of long-term contracts

Improved working conditions

Support in gaining knowledge and skills needed to operate successfully in the global economy

From today, Australian-made Cadbury Moro bars will start appearing on New Zealand shelves. As part of our long-standing commitment to New Zealand, Cadbury’s Dunedin factory...

From today, Australian-made Cadbury Moro bars will start appearing on New Zealand shelves.

As part of our long-standing commitment to New Zealand, Cadbury’s Dunedin factory now specialises in making a range of products for the New Zealand and Australian markets. This includes boxed chocolates such as Roses and Milk Tray, and iconic Kiwi favourites Pinky and Marshmallow Eggs. It will soon also be making Turkish Delight for Australian and New Zealand consumption.

In the same way that New Zealand has taken over manufacturing from some Australian factories, these changes mean that some products previously made in New Zealand will now move to Australia. One of these products is Moro.

Cadbury New Zealand Managing Director, Matthew Oldham, says, “We know how much Kiwis love the chocolate we make here in New Zealand. However these production changes are essential to help us secure the future of the Dunedin factory and secure hundreds of jobs for Kiwis – the future of New Zealand manufacturing lies in exporting as well as continuing to make some iconic products here such as Jaffas, Pinky, Chocolate Fish and Buzz Bar.”

The first batch of Australian-made Moro will be rolled out across 60g bars with 85g twin packs and share-packs to arrive on shelves over the next few weeks, and Cadbury is keen to ensure the Australian-made Moro meets with Kiwis’ expectations.

Matthew Oldham says, “While we can’t change the fact that Moro now has to be made in Australia, we plan to do everything we can to ensure Kiwis keep enjoying it.

“Making a chocolate bar in a different factory is like making a cake in a different kitchen – you can’t always guarantee it will turn out exactly the same. Though we’ve been working hard to get it right, there may be some slight changes noticeable in the initial batches of Moro made in our Australian factory.

“However we have a unique situation with Moro in that we’re able to refine and develop the way it is made at our Australian factory to ensure it remains a chocolate bar that Kiwis love. So we’re asking New Zealand Moro lovers to lend us their tastebuds and give us their input.

“We really want to hear what chocolate fans have to say about Moro so that we can be sure we’ve got it right.”

New Zealand chocolate fans who would like to give their thoughts can participate in a survey at www.choclovers.co.nz or by calling 0800 CADBURY.

Cadbury New Zealand today announced that New Zealand’s best selling chocolate, Cadbury Dairy Milk, has been given a major makeover with a fresh new pack design...

Cadbury New Zealand today announced that New Zealand’s best selling chocolate, Cadbury Dairy Milk, has been given a major makeover with a fresh new pack design, showcasing its Fairtrade certification.

The new look pack also re-confirms Cadbury’s return to a cocoa butter only chocolate recipe across its entire Cadbury Dairy Milk block chocolate range, with all blocks within the new packaging containing 26% cocoa solids, (up from 21% when the recipe included palm oil).

Cadbury New Zealand Managing Director, Matthew Oldham, said the new packs have been designed to reinforce the quality and ethics that Kiwis expect of Cadbury.

“We are incredibly proud to be the first mainstream chocolate brand in New Zealand to achieve Fairtrade certification. We hope other chocolate makers follow our lead and do the right thing by committing to Fairtrade and in turn deliver real financial benefits to cocoa farmers.

“The new pack design with its gold Cadbury logo and Fairtrade label is designed to emphasise our commitment to ethical sourcing and quality ingredients. We’ve returned to a full cocoa butter recipe across our entire block chocolate range and every ingredient within our 9 plain Cadbury Dairy Milk products that can be certified Fairtrade will be Fairtrade.”

“This is a major commitment, and Fairtrade is an area where scale really does matter. We are the country’s biggest chocolate maker and in making the nation’s best selling chocolate Fairtrade we can do more good,” he said.

In its move to make New Zealand’s best selling chocolate Fairtrade, Cadbury has taken Fairtrade from niche to mainstream and in the process enabled millions of Kiwis to help Ghanaian cocoa farmers to build better lives for their communities.

Cadbury’s global commitment to Fairtrade will see more than 5.7 million blocks and bars in New Zealand and 350 million Cadbury Dairy Milk blocks and bars globally carry the Fairtrade label by the end of this year.

“Already Cadbury’s move has quadrupled the amount of Fairtrade cocoa coming out of Ghana which benefits more than 40,000 farmers – a commitment no other New Zealand chocolate maker can come close to,” said Matthew Oldham.

The new look Cadbury Dairy Milk packs will arrive on shelves this Easter. All Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate block weights will remain the same as the current packaging.
